FG Partner UNESCO To Improve Flood Control, WASH Services

The Federal Government has entered into a partnership with UNESCO to provide knowledge sharing, technical assistance, and capacity building initiatives on improved WASH.
Through these joint efforts, Nigeria aims to develop and implement evidence-based policies and interventions that can effectively address the issues of flooding and WASH services.
The Nigerian Federal Government has restated its dedication to collaborating with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in order to tackle the persistent challenges related to flooding, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services in the country.?
During a courtesy visit to his office in Abuja, Joseph Utsev, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, expressed his commitment. The visit was made by Mr. Abdourahammanne Diallo, UNESCO’s Representative to Nigeria, along with other members of UNESCO entities.
Utsev called upon UNESCO to establish a partnership with Nigeria concerning flood management, emphasizing the detrimental effects of flooding on both the population and the economy.
He emphasized the importance of UNESCO’s comprehensive support package for Nigeria and Africa, which covers essential aspects such as flood management, water supply, water quality elements, irrigation, hydrology, and more.
The minister pointed out the urgent need for enhanced collaboration between the Ministry and UNESCO to advance groundwater management.
He placed great emphasis on the significance of UNESCO’s all-encompassing assistance plan for Nigeria and Africa, encompassing vital areas like flood control, water provision, water quality components, irrigation, hydrology, and various other aspects.
He gave his assurance that the Ministry would work together with UNESCO to promote the campaign, construct additional toilets, and enhance awareness among the population.
While highlighting the critical nature of water conservation, Utsev called for increased collaboration between the Ministry and UNESCO in preparation for the upcoming World Water Day, slated for March 22.
Mr. Abdourahammanne Diallo, the Head of UNESCO Abuja Office, underscored the vital importance of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) for the welfare of the nation in his comments.
He expressed his congratulations to Nigeria for its advancements in the UNESCO Intergovernmental Programmes and affirmed UNESCO’s continued assistance to the Ministry in fulfilling its responsibilities in accordance with the goals of Mr. President’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
